Western Michigan University's campus utilities deliver services to over 150 buildings, consisting of:

Electrical Distribution System

  • Approximately 14 miles of duct bank with over 20 miles of medium voltage cable
  • 166 access vaults
  • 219 primary switches
  • Over 39 miles of exterior lightning and secondary voltage conduit

Steam and Condensate Systems for Heating and Hot Water

  • Approximately 6.6 miles of steam main
  • Approximately 6.2 miles of condensate return mains
  • 44 access vaults

Chilled Water

  • Chilled, cooling towers, chilled water and condenser lines providing air conditioning to 33 buildings
  • 11,000 ton-hour available cooling capacity

Storm Sewer System

  • 1,816 manhole/inlet structures.
  • Approximately 32.6 miles of storm water main
  • 78 Main Campus discharge points within the Arcadia Creek watershed
  • 62 Storm Water Retention/Detention Features (22 acres)
  • Parkview Campus contains all storm water on site

Sanitary Sewer System

  • 298 manhole structures
  • Approximately 8.7 miles of sanitary sewer mains
  • Approximately 1.9 miles of sanitary sewer laterals

Water System*

  • Approximately 1.3 miles of Western Michigan University water mains
  • Approximately 22 miles of City of Kalamazoo owned and maintained water mains

Natural Gas System**

  • Over 10 miles of Consumer Energy owned and maintained gas mains

Tunnel System

  •  Approximately2.4 miles of Utility Tunnels, carrying multiple distribution systems
