Conference Presentation Support for Participants

Policies and Procedures

The MTS Project is able to provide travel support for some former institute participants whose studies are approved for presentation at regional or national meetings, who meet the criteria for support, and who receive approval from the project director. In order to qualify for the support, proposals must be submitted and be approved for support by the MTS project director. Support is available for presentations beginning in 2002 and until April 2004. The purpose of travel support for presentations is to advance the objectives of the MTS project and The National Science Foundation.

Criteria:

Present the results of a study at a regional or national meeting/conference.

The presentation must be clearly related to the objectives of the MTS project.

  • Investigate the quality of evaluations applied to science education grants to identify ways and means to improve the quality of program evaluations
  • Build the capacity of science educators to develop and carry through strong program evaluations
  • Disseminate evaluation information and materials to science educators through instructional opportunities (conferences, institutes, and internships) and through direct sharing of ideas, materials, and resources

It is the responsibility of the presenter(s) to demonstrate the relationship of the presentation to the MTS project and to provide complete information about the regional or national meeting/conference.

Eligibility of the presentation must be obtained in writing from the MTS project director prior to the start of the meeting.

Clear acknowledgement of support from the MTS project and NSF must be included in the presentation, in materials distributed as part of the presentation, and in any subsequent publication of work derived from the presentation.

A copy of the presentation and associated materials and the relevant pages from the conference program must be submitted to the MTS project, along with the request for reimbursement.

Participants will be eligible for support for only one presentation per calendar year

If co-presenters jointly present one presentation, each will be eligible for an equal portion of the support. If the co-presenters also present other sessions jointly, the pool of support money will be increased up to a maximum of $1000 for each. For example, if two participants co-author and co-present one presentation at a conference, each would be eligible for up to $500. If the two are also co-presenting a second presentation, the total available to them would be doubled and each would be eligible for up to $1000.

Procedures:

A specific request by email, fax, or regular mail must be submitted to the MTS project director.

The request must include detailed information about the
  1. Meeting or conference (sponsoring organization, location, etc.)
  2. Time and day of the presentation
  3. Title of the presentation
  4. Presenter(s) for the session
  5. Description as presented in the program or as included in the presentation proposal

A clear explanation must be presented, explaining how the presentation is related to the objectives of the MTS project and how it is related to one or more activities begun at an MTS summer institute.

Expect up to two weeks for review of the request. Upon completion of the review, written notification will be sent to the participant who submitted the request. An email reply will also be sent.

After the presentation is given, the presenter(s) must submit a Travel Expense Worksheet . Also submitted at this time should be a copy of the presentation and associated materials and copies of the specific pages in the conference program listing the presentation and information about the conference. If the presentation is or will be published as part of the proceedings of the conference, through ERIC, or other publication, send the full reference for the publication to the MTS project director.

If you have further questions, please direct them to Arlen Gullickson, Project Director, or Dale Farland.
