MTS SUMMER INSTITUTE PLAN

1999

DRAFT

(Updated 5/3/99)

Overview

The Institute will meet daily Monday-Friday for a three-week period, June 7-25. During that time Institute participants will be afforded the opportunity to gain theoretical and practical knowledge and experience of program evaluation.

The Institute is viewed as an intense time of study and learning, requiring individual and collaborative learning activities. Participants will have their breakfast and lunch together. Immediately following breakfast, at 8 a.m. participants will meet to address administrative matters for the day (e.g., required paperwork and any revisions in schedule), review progress in the Institute, and obtain feedback from participants and presenters. At 9:00 a.m. the Institute's program evaluation course will commence and meet until noon. Following lunch, participants will engage in an array of less structured activities (meetings with Center evaluation staff, team development efforts, etc.). The daily Institute schedule completes by 4:00 p.m. daily. Late afternoon and evening events may be scheduled by participants themselves. When participation by all participants is desired for these "after hours" events, they should be coordinated with Dr. Lento, the Institute Coordinator.

The regularly scheduled time block of 9-12 noon will be directed by Dr. Stufflebeam. He has developed the course curriculum based on the needs statements of participants. This instructional part of the Institute is constructed to meet University requirements for a three-credit course. Persons who attend the full three-week portion of the course are eligible to receive 3 semester hours of credit; those attending for two weeks may receive 2 credits. To obtain this credit a participant must notify Dr. Stufflebeam of the expectation to take the course for credit (this must be done immediately-on the first day of attendance), register and pay tuition for the course, and arrange with Dr. Stufflebeam for completing work requirements related to that credit.

Two social events--dinner at the Gullickson residence and an evening at Dr. Stufflebeam's house on Lake Michigan have been scheduled. Both occasions are informal and a time for relaxation, visiting, and games. No Institute events are scheduled for the weekends. All participants are free to relax, visit the many sites and activities in this area, or study.

Two schedules are provided below. The first describes the course component of the Institute, (i.e., the 9-12 noon daily). The second provides planned activities for the afternoons. The two schedules are provided separately to assist those who desire to enroll for course credit in understanding which aspects of the Institute are part of the course.

Following the schedules, we provide a brief description of the project staffing. Because so many persons participate in the Institute, we thought this description would help participants and presenters get organized and obtain needed assistance.

Appended to the document are several items that Dr. Stufflebeam prepared as stepping stones to determining the Institute course content. The items include Guiding Assumptions, MTS Needs/Assets Analysis, MTS Instructor Experience, Instructional Materials, Instructional Schedule, and Needs-Based Instructional Objectives CHECKLIST. These documents are provided to show you the steps taken and to help you understand the factors involved in preparation of this course.
