Kalamazoo Valley Walkers Places to Walk

Al Sabo Land Preserve

  • a wellhead area with trails through woods, wetlands, and meadows
  • about a 10-minute drive from WMU campus

Allegan State Game Area

  • a beautiful, rugged 3½ - 4 hour loop around a lake
  • about a 40-minute drive northwest of Kalamazoo

Bishop's Bog Preserve and West Lake Nature Preserve

  • boardwalk trails and unique flora (e.g., tamarack trees, lady slippers, pitcher plants, blueberries)
  • in Portage, about a 20-minute drive from campus

Kleinstuck Nature Preserve

  • a 50-acre wooded preserve, with a ~1 mile loop that circles a marsh
  • about 2 miles from campus

Kalamazoo Nature Center

  • several short, looped trails; interpretive center; gardens
  • $4.50/person entrance fee
  • about a 10-minute drive north of Kalamazoo

Fort Custer Recreation Area

  • about a 20-minute drive east of Kalamazoo.
  • $4.00/vehicle entrance fee
  • hiking trails around 2 lakes, swimming lake, and excellent mountain biking trails

Yankee Springs State Recreation Area

  • several hiking and mountain biking trails
  • about a 40-minute drive northeast of Kalamazoo
