Instructions for Administering Surveys to Teachers/Staff
Charter School Survey
1. A checklist of all teachers and staff working
more than 3 hours per week at
the school should be
compiled. Use the form on the back side of these
instructions.
2. Prepare a “survey package” for each
sampled teacher/staff member. This
should include the
following items:
- A return
envelope addressed to the designated person in the school who
will receive the surveys. The name of the teacher/staff member should
be
written on the lower left hand corner of the return envelope.
- A cover
letter. Write the name of the person at the school who should
receive the surveys in the appropriate slot in the cover letter.
- The light
purple colored Charter School Survey (trifold). Write the school
ID number on the top of each questionnaire in case they get misplaced.
Also note in your field notes the approximate range of questionnaires used
at each school.
3. The questionnaires can be sent to the
teachers via their school mailboxes.
It is preferable that
the teachers and staff complete the surveys individually rather
than in a group. Consult
with each school and prepare the survey packages
accordingly.
4. The teachers/staff members should not
write their names on the survey,
although they will
be written on the outside of the return envelope. When the
questionnaires are
completed and returned to the designated person at the
school, the name of
the teacher/staff member is checked off the list to denote
that the survey was
completed and returned.
5. The envelopes should not be opened at
the school, since we have assured
teachers/staff
that their responses would be confidential. If envelopes are
opened at the school,
the surveys will be thrown out.
6. The designated person responsible for
this survey at each school is encouraged
to follow up
with nonresponding teachers/staff members. It is best to do this
after two (2) days
in order to limit the chance that the questionnaires are
misplaced. A
few extra survey packets can be left at each school in the event
that a teacher misplaces
the questionnaire.
7. After collecting all the surveys from
teachers and staff on the checklist, the
designated person at
each school should return to The Evaluation Center
(i) all the surveys
and (ii) a copy of the checklist of names of teachers and staff.
A large addressed envelope
is included for this purpose. Remember to write
the school name on
the large envelope to help quickly identify the school when
they are returned to
The Evaluation Center.
8. The Field Researcher should make a copy
of the check list of teacher/staff
names before leaving
the school which should be returned immediately to The
Evaluation Center to
assist in follow-up.
9. A summary of the results for each school
will be returned to the school after
the data analysis is
completed. Additionally, the total results from the Pennsylvania
charter schools will
be provided to each school so that each school can examine
its relevant standing.
