A Study of Advisory Committees Used by
ATE Projects and Centers

Authors:  Wayne Welch and Robert Reineke

Introduction

In September 2001, the National Science Foundation (NSF) requested that we further study the advisory committee process as it was being implemented by ATE projects and centers. Of particular interest was the National Visiting Committee (NVC) process used by NSF. There were two general tasks for this study:

  1. To learn more about the advisory committee process in the ATE context, and
  2. To develop procedures that can be used to improve the effectiveness of ATE advisory committees.

Two reports and accompanying brochures resulted from this study.

Part A: The ATE Advisory Committee-Use in the ATE Context [170 KB PDF file]

Part B: Procedures to Improve ATE Advisory Committees [148 KB PDF file]

Advisory Committee Checklist (brochure) [204 KB PDF file]

The Advisory Committee Checklist is a set of items (called checkpoints) to consider when planning and implementing a committee. It is based on our surveys, site visits, and literature reviews. We believe that projects that use the checkpoints will have effective and productive advisory committees.

The checklist consists of four sections:

  1. Organizing the Committee
  2. Planning a Committee Meeting
  3. Implementing the Meeting
  4. Following Through

Meeting Reminders for Advisory Committee Members (brochure) [210 KB PDF file]

This document consists of three sections:

  1. Planning for Meetings
  2. During the Meeting
  3. After the Committee Meets

The documents are available in pdf format. To view and/or print them, you will need to download and install the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software.
