The last three decades have witnessed a considerable growth in and development of international large-scale assessments. Despite the wealth of data that is collected through the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) and Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) research programs, much of the media attention continues to be focused on international rankings. This presentation will provide an overview of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement’s (IEA) TIMSS and the PIRLS with a view to providing participants with an understanding of the purpose, practices, and challenges associated with international large-scale assessments. Using some examples from the US and other countries, it will address some of the common concerns expressed about the validity of these assessments and their use in understanding learning outcomes locally and globally.
