WMU and Sex Discrimination

Western Michigan University (Western) is committed to an environment that is safe and free from harassment for all members of the campus community.  Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title IX of the Education Amendments Act of 1972 and the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, as amended, prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex in both the workplace and education programs and activities.

Sexual harassment is a form of prohibited sex discrimination and a violation of state and federal law and University policy.  As a recipient of federal funding and financial assistance, Western is responsible for ensuring compliance with legal provisions.  Western is committed to:

  1. educating all members of the campus community about the nature of sexual harassment,
  2. creating an environment that is not conducive to prohibited behavior,
  3. preventing acts of sexual harassment, and
  4. taking seriously all allegations of possible sexual harassment.
