The Jean Vincent Malstrom Scholarship

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Second semester Junior or first semester Senior
  • Major/Minor in English Education, and courses in English Language (grammar, structure, history, dialects)
  • Minimum GPA 3.5

Award Amount: $500.00 for fall semester (non-renewable)

The Ralph N. Miller Memorial Award

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Junior
  • English Major or Minor
  • GPA considered, but no minimum requirements
  • Intellectual curiosity, daring, forcefulness, and enthusiasm

Award Amount: $300.00 for fall semester (non-renewable)

Students nominated (or self-nominated) must submit writing samples.

The Frederick J. Rogers Memorial Shakespeare Award

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Anyone enrolled in an English course in which he or she wrote a paper on Shakespeare within the last year

Award Amount: $250.00

Submit the essay, including the instructor's name, course name and the semester it was completed.

The George Sprau Award(s) in English

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Senior status; occasionally an outstanding Junior is also honored
  • Superior academic records

Award Amount: $25.00-$175.00

Students are nominated by faculty.

WMU Creative Writing Awards

Eligibility Criteria:

  • WMU students, graduate and undergraduate

Award Amount: Seven Awards of $50.00 and three of $100.00.

Playwriting, Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction awards, in separate categories of graduate and undergraduate.

Submit work in drama, fiction, or creative non-fiction not exceeding 20 pages, or up to 5 poems, to the English Department , usually by the end of February.

Selected by judges for outside Western Michigan University.
