Minimum Registration Requirements

Note:  Please consult page 14 of the Graduate Catalog for information on the way that one’s enrollment influences one’s payment of fees to the university.

Doctoral Associates

In order to receive his/her DA award, a PhD student must be registered in at least 6 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters.  A doctoral associateship covers up to 9 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters, but we encourage first year students to take only 6 hours per term to ensure a balance between scholarship and teaching loads.

Teaching Assistants

In order to receive his/her TA award, a MA-level student must be registered in at least 6 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Full-Time/Part-Time Students without a DA or TA Award

In order to be considered “full time,” a student must be registered for six hours in Fall and Spring.  In order to be considered “part time,” a student must be registered for three hours in Fall and Spring.

Doctoral Students who are ABD (All But Dissertation)

Once a student has completed all of his/her coursework and departmental examinations for the PhD, he/she must register for ENGL 7300 Dissertation Hours and must take at least one hour of ENGL 7300 during the Fall and Spring semesters until graduation.
