In order to receive his/her DA award, a PhD student must be registered in at least 6 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters. A doctoral associateship covers up to 9 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters, but we encourage first year students to take only 6 hours per term to ensure a balance between scholarship and teaching loads.
Teaching Assistants
In order to receive his/her TA award, a MA-level student must be registered in at least 6 hours during the Fall and Spring semesters.
In order to be considered “full time,” a student must be registered for six hours in Fall and Spring. In order to be considered “part time,” a student must be registered for three hours in Fall and Spring.
Doctoral Students who are ABD (All But Dissertation)
Once a student has completed all of his/her coursework and departmental examinations for the PhD, he/she must register for ENGL 7300 Dissertation Hours and must take at least one hour of ENGL 7300 during the Fall and Spring semesters until graduation.
