NOTE: All applicants to Doctoral Degree Programs must fill out a Graduate College Application and a Departmental Application. You can access the Graduate College Applications at www.wmich.edu/grad. You can access the Department of English Application at www.wmich.edu/english/grad.html.
In order to apply for admission, most students must present an MA in English, an MATE, or an MFA in Creative Writing with a minimum GPA of 3.0. In rare instances, a student may be admitted directly from the BA to the PhD level, if he/she also has a great deal of professional or academic experience. Students with Master’s Degrees in areas other than English, English Education, or Creative Writing may have to take extra coursework in order to make up deficiencies.
Applicants must provide GRE General and Subject Test scores from no more than five years ago. They also should provide a writing sample, a statement of purpose, and three letters of recommendation. Finally, applicants should fill out a detailed departmental application, which is available through a link on the English Department website.
The application deadline for all of our graduate programs is January 1st. By this date, the student will need to have submitted a completed application both to the Graduate College and to the Department. Applicants are typically informed regarding admission on or about late February.
