First Year Orientation

Doctoral Associate Orientation

Students entering the PhD programs in Literature and English Education will teach one section of ENGL 1100 Literary Interpretation during both the Fall and Spring semesters.  In early June, they will be sent a packet including an instructor’s copy of the anthology they will be using, as well as sample syllabi.  Students enrolled in the PhD program in Creative Writing will teach one section of ENGL 2660 Workshop in Fiction/Poetry during both the Fall and Spring semesters.  In their packet, they will find sample syllabi and a textbook order form they can use to select their texts.

All incoming DAs must arrive on campus in time to attend the mandatory orientation session that takes place the week before classes begin.  On Tuesday of that week, they will participate in the Graduate College Orientation; then, on a Wednesday, they will attend either the department’s ENGL 1100 or ENGL 2660 orientation workshop.  Students will also have an opportunity during the orientation week to receive the keys to their offices, register for classes, obtain parking permits, and familiarize themselves with the campus.

Teaching Assistant Orientation

Students who are entering in the MA, MAET, or MFA programs with a teaching assistantship teach one section of ENGL 1050 Thought and Writing during both the Fall and Spring semesters of their first year.  (Second and third year students teach a 2/1 load).  In early June, incoming TAs will be sent a packet that includes an instructor’s copy of the composition textbook they will be using, as well as sample syllabi.
