Key courses in English education at Western Michigan University This
class focuses on
the concepts and methods of teaching writing to young children and
elementary-aged students, including writing workshop, writing to learn,
and the writing process.
Future
teachers will
learn how to teach to students of various dialects, ethnicities, and
languages.
This
course focuses
around core concepts of teaching writing, including the writing
process, issues of audience, purpose, and genre, and responding and
evaluating student writing.
ENGL 480: Teaching Literature in the Secondary School This
course teaches future
teachers means of effectively teaching
literary works, both traditional and contemporary. There is a strong
technology component to the course.
ENGL 574: Grammar in the Teaching of Writing This
course teachers current and future teachers how to use grammar to
enrich and enhance student
writing, including how to
integrate grammar into the writing process, and to teach grammar
within a context. Open to
undergraduate and graduate
students.
ENGL 680: Advanced Teaching in Literature Advanced
study in contemporary
methods and theories of teaching literature.
ENGL 681:
Advanced Teaching in Language
