Fall 2006 returning English 1000 instructor Lacey Wylie offers the following advice to upcoming students:

Prepare mentally.  You can expect that this class will be challenging and very different from most English classes you’ve already taken.  Come with an open mind.

Prepare your writing.  This is a class designed to help you change the way you write.  You will be writing in class everyday.  A strong recommendation: begin keeping a daily journal.  This will help you get into the rhythm of the classroom.  It will also provide material for use in class.

Prepare to change and grow.  Writers are always looking for new ideas and styles.  We will practice many different writing activities so you will know that there is more than one way to write an essay.

Prepare to feel differently about writing.  Maybe you’ve been told you can’t write.  Maybe you’ve had a paper returned to you with mistakes circled, crossed out, or outlined in criticism.  This class is about helping you grow into a confident writer.  You will learn about your options in writing.  You will also see that you can write and write well.

Prepare your schedule.  Realize that writing takes time.  As you budget your time between classes, homework, friends and work, remember your writing.  To grow and change takes a commitment from you that you will give your writing time instead of doing something quickly at the last minute.

Prepare to try something new.  This class explores different genres and audiences.  You might not be entirely comfortable or confident with how some assignments are directed.  We ask that you do your best in spite of being uncomfortable.  Remember, it’s just an assignment, and it help to have experience across the board.  Your instructor is available for additional help as well.

Prepare to share.  This is a writing class.  You will be directing your topics.  Whatever you write will be shared with your instructor and peers.  If you don’t feel comfortable sharing something, it is best to not use the topic for class purposes.

Prepare to read.  You will be expected to work with peers in groups on each others’ papers and on group assignments.  Know that you will regularly read through peers’ papers for the purpose of providing feedback.

Prepare for one-on-one help.  During each paper cycle, you will meet with your instructor personally.  This ensures that you are heading in the right direction, and it also allows you time to ask your instructor for specific help or ask questions.  Use this time wisely.

Come with a positive attitude. This class offers an opportunity to improve your writing in ways you may not have thought possible. While we’ll be working hard, we ask that you let yourself enjoy the experience.  This is a one-of-a-kind class!
