The following is excerpted from the WMU Placement materials.

Your writing placement is based on a combination of ACT-English or SAT-Verbal scores and high school GPA.  Placement will be at one of the following levels

  •   Required to take ENGL 1000: Basic Writing in the Fall semester.
OR
  • Placement at Proficiency 1, college-level writing.  Proficiency 1 classes include ENGL 1050, IME 1020, or BIS 1420, depending on your curriculum.  Please do not select a writing class without consulting with your advisor first.
Follow the table below to determine your placement.

For example, if your high school GPA is under 2.79, but your ACT score is 17 +  or your SAT is 391 +, you will be placed in a college-level writing class (ENGL 1050, IME 1020, or BIS 1420). If your GPA is under 2.79, but your ACT or SAT scores are lower than 17-ACT/391-SAT, you will enter ENGL 1000: Basic Writing.
