The following is excerpted from the WMU Placement materials.

Your writing placement is based on a combination of ACT-English or SAT-Verbal scores and high school GPA.  Placement will be at one of the following levels

Follow the table below to determine your placement. 

HS GPA	ACT English or SAT Verbal
	ACT 14 or less                  SAT 350 or less	ACT15                                             SAT 351-370	ACT16                                           SAT 371-390	ACT17+                                              SAT 391+
3.0+	ENGL 1000	College-level	College-level	College-level
2.8-2.99	ENGL 1000	ENGL 1000	College-level	College-level
2.79 and below	ENGL 1000	ENGL 1000	ENGL 1000	College-level

For example, if your high school GPA is under 2.79, but your ACT score is 17 +  or your SAT is 391 +, you will be placed in a college-level writing class (ENGL 1050, IME 1020, or BIS 1420). If your GPA is under 2.79, but your ACT or SAT scores are lower than 17-ACT/391-SAT, you will enter ENGL 1000: Basic Writing.
