30 Credit Hours + 8 Credit Professional Component

N.B. A minimum grade of C is required for all courses applied to the major.

I. Required Entry Level Course (4 credits)

  • 1100: Literary Interpretation (4) Prerequisite: A minimum grade of B in 1050.

II. Required Courses (19-21 credits)


A. One of the following British Literature courses:

  • 2520: Shakespeare (4)

B. One of the following American Literature courses:

  • 3200: American Literature I (3)
  • 3210: American Literature II (3)

C. 3840: Adolescent Literature (3)

D. One of the following English Language courses:

  • 3710: Structures of Modern English (4)
  • 3720: Development of Modern English (4)
  • 4720: Language Variation in American English (4)
  • 5740: Grammar in Teaching Writing (4)

E. One of the following Multi-Cultural American literature courses:

  • 2220: Literatures and Cultures of the United States (4)
  • 2230: African American Literature (4)
  • 5830: Multi-Cultural Literature for Adolescents (3)

F. One of the following World Literature courses:

  • 3120: Western World Literature (3)
  • 3130: Asian Literature (3)

III. Advanced Studies in English (7-8 credits)


A. One of the following courses at the 4000 level:

  • 4150: Practical Literary Criticism (4)

B. One elective English course at the 4000 or 5000 level.

IV. Professional Component (8 credits)

  • Prerequisite: Education 4060

V. Foreign Language Requirement


Minimum of two semesters of one modern or classical foreign language at the college level, or two years of one foreign language at the high school level with a minimum grade of B- at the end of the second year. One year of high school level foreign language coupled with the second semester of the same language at the college level is also satisfactory.
