Program Overview

This three-week engineering seminar will include tours of companies such as Dow Chemical, Pfizer, Daimler-Chrysler, Benteler and others. In addition, students will visit research laboratories of a leading German university, as well as a tour of the Heinz Nixdorf Museum, the world's largest computer museum. German engineering is recognized around the world for its quality and educational system.  Universität Paderborn is a leader in engineering research and education and has been a partner with WMU for many years.  We have collaborated through student and faculty exchange and joint research projects.  A delegation from WMU's College of Engineering and Applied Sciences visited Paderborn in December 2006 to continue discussions of joint projects in engineering.  Participants will visit a mix of larger cities like Frankfurt as well as smaller cities like Paderborn and Köln. German students will interact with the group during residency at Universität Paderborn and a visit to the University of Bonn. Cultural activities and time to explore will be provided including optional hiking excursions on the weekend. Following the conclusion of the program, students are encouraged to explore Germany further and planning assistance will be available for those students who wish to traverse the country.

Academic Credit

WMU credit will be awarded for successfully completing this program with prior approval from Dr. Aller or Dr. Kline. CEAS is reviewing a new course proposal ENG 3300 - Global Engineering. If this course has not been approved by time of registration, students will be enrolled in 3 credits INTL 4050: Engineering in Germany. This course will require student presentation, project report, and final exam. See Drs. Aller or Kline for more detail.

Housing

Lodging will be in budget hotels, double occupancy and bath. Program price includes breakfast and dinner.

Cost

The program fee includes tuition and fees, travel within Germany, lodging, breakfast and dinner, most entrance fees, excursions, and insurance. Not included are airfare, passport, lunches, and personal expenses (see cost estimate).

Financial Aid

Students eligible for federal or state financial aid can use their awards for studying abroad. After a student has been accepted to the program, he/she must complete required paperwork with the Financial Aid staff in order to apply financial aid to the program costs. It is the student's responsibility to complete the paperwork prior to departure and to maintain compliance with financial aid regulations while studying abroad (i.e. remain enrolled in the program credits). Non-WMU students must apply for financial aid through their home university.
