Understanding Selective Release
Within Blackboard Vistsa designers and instructors have the option to set release criteria on course objects. This document explains how and when to use selective release.
Set Release Criteria is a tool used to limit access to an object linked into your E-learning course such as a file, folder, learning module, exam, or assignment. This tool is found under Course Tools or Instructor Tools from either the Build or Teach tab.
Hidden/Shown versus Selective Release
By default any items linked into your Coure Content page or items that appear in your tool inventories (such as discussions, assessments or assignments) are SHOWN to ALL students.
If you hide an item, it is HIDDEN to All students. Do not use Selective Release if you want something hidden from the entire class. Use the Shown/Hidden option. Afer hiding a link, you can edit the properties of the hidden element and change hidden to shown.
Selective release is best used to limit access to a subset of students (for example for group assignments), to time release content, or to re-release course links to quizzes or assignments afer due dates have past.
What Selective Release CAN do
- Release files, folders, links, and learning modules (or links within a learning module) by date or other criteria
- Re-release links to assignments or assessments to students who missed completion dates (Due dates are set within the tool).
- Release the visibitity of items in your tool inventory (such as quizzes).
What Selective Release CANNOT do
- Set assignment due dates or cutoff dates - this is done in the Assignment tool when the assigment is created
- Set quiz aviability periods in Assessments - this is done in the Assessment tool when the quiz is created.
Some examples
- Show/Hide
- You have uploaded a PDF version of your next lecture to next week's learning module. You want to hide the link until a few days after the lecture, after which you show the link.
-
-
- Selective Release By Date
- You have 5 learning modules in your course. You want to limit access to the modules by date, so that a new module shows up in the course every two to three weeks.
You have 10 online quizzes. Rather than display the entire list to your students, you want students to see the list of the first five quizzes at the beginning of the course and the second set of five quizzes after the Midterm.
-
- Selective Release by Member
- Two students had technology problems during a quiz, you want to re-release the quiz link so that only these students can re-take the test.
-
- Selective Release by Score
- In order to take Exam 2, students must pass Exam 1.
