Beginning of Term Tasks

First Time Setup

You need to setup your course before students can access it, otherwise, your students will receive a "course is unavailable" message. When you access a course for the first time you are given the four options below.

first-time-access screen

  • Use "Setup a blank course" for a course you have never used with E-learning before.
  • Use "Copy content..." to copy content from one E-learning course section to another - for instance, if you teach the same course Fall 2006 and Spring 2007, you can copy the content from the Fall course to the Spring course.
  • Use "Assign a template to this course" if you have designed and associated a template for the course.
  • Use "Import content from a file" if you have a zip archive of an exported course from the WebCT CE server or if you have an e-pack from your publisher.

What students need to know

At the beginning of each semester you need to provide your students with the following information

There is also a student orientation course available.

Using the E-learning Grade Book

The following situations may not apply to your use of the E-learning grade book.

If you plan to use Excel as your prismary grade book, but would like to post grades in E-learning, you need to

  1. Setup the columns you will use in Excel in your E-learning gradebook first.
  2. Download your student list from E-learning (not from your Self-service Banner area in GoWMU). As part of the download, you can open the list directly in Excel and save it as a workbook.
  3. In the E-learning gradebook, change the column type of the Midterm and Final colums to alphanumeric (use the "Gradebook Options>Column Settings" button in the upper right corner of your E-learning gradebook).

Once you have setup an Excel workbook you can use the Save As feature to save the workbook as comma delimited file. You can then upload and import the file into the WebCT Visat grade book.
