Professional Readiness Examination (PRE)

Western Michigan University teacher education candidates must pass the PRE prior to admission to the upper  professional level in any teaching program. The PRE consists of three subjects: Mathematics, Reading, and Writing. Together, the Mathematics and Reading subtests comprise approximately 85 multiple-choice questions. The Writing subtest consists of approximately 42 multiple-choice questions and two written constructed-response assignments. To pass the PRE, you must pass each of the subtests. If you do not pass one or more PRE subtest, you may retake only those subtests.

Alternatives to the MTTC #96 Professional Readiness Exam

In June 2014, WMU learned that the Michigan Department of Education will accept ACT or Michigan Merit Exam (MME) subscores in lieu of passing the related subtest(s) on the MTTC #96 Professional Readiness Exam (PRE). Passing score equivalencies are listed below.

ACT scores equivalencies are: MME equivalencies are:
Reading 22 Reading 1108
Mathematics 22 Mathematics 1116
English and Writing 24 Writing 1129

A combination of PRE, ACT, and MME scores may be used to meet the requirement. SAT scores cannot currently be used.

Please contact the College of Education and Human Development advising office at or make an appointment with an advisor if you think you are eligible to use ACT or MME subscores in lieu of PRE subtests for admission to the Upper Professional Level.  Specific documentation will be required.

Timing: A passing score for all three subtests of the PRE is required for admission to the Upper Professional Level in all WMU teacher education programs. All candidates should pass all three sections of the PRE by the end of their second year
