Major In EconomicsEconomists study fundamental problems arising from scarcity such as how to manage resources efficiently, how to organize individual and social efforts to improve standards of living, and how to avoid excessive unemployment and inflation. Economists analyze policies in such specific areas as international trade and finance, money and banking, industrial organization, resource economics, public finance, and economic development. Majoring in Economics is not for everyone.
Economists apply rational decision-making procedures to complex questions --
to do well requires an ability to think analytically. But this is, at least
in part, what makes Economics a prestigious major. Economics is recognized as a demanding curriculum and is viewed that way by prospective employers. Majoring in economics as an undergraduate will help you to build a strong foundation for a variety of careers, including business, law, foreign service, journalism, public administration and teaching. Department of Economics- Major Form The Economics major consists of a minimum of
thirty credit hours of ECON courses. Seven courses are required for all
majors: Principles of Microeconomics (ECON 2010), Principles of
Macroeconomics (ECON 2020), Intermediate Microeconomics (ECON 4030),
Intermediate Macroeconomics (ECON 4060), Introductory Economic Statistics
(ECON 4020), Econometrics (ECON 4090), and Comparative Economic Systems (ECON
4840), the Department's designated "writing intensive" course. Students
