Faculty and Graduate Students to Present at Seventh Annual National Communication Ethics Conference

The seventh annual National Communication Ethics conference to be held on the campus of Western Michigan University May 30 - June 2, 2002 will include presentations by several WMU graduate students and faculty. Three communication graduate students will present debut papers at the conference (see article that follows).

On Friday evening a panel addressing media ethics and the coverage of September 11 will include WMU communication faculty Nancy Cornwell, Sandra Borden, and Sue Ellen Christian.

The Communication Ethics Conference is a biannual event sponsored by the Communication Ethics Commission of the National Communication Association, the Center for the Study of Ethics in Society, the School of Communication and the College of Arts and Sciences at Western Michigan University; and the School of Communication at Duquesne University. The purpose of the conference is to promote
research and teaching relating to ethical issues and standards in all aspects of human communication and to facilitate exchange among teachers and scholars of communication ethics.

A highlight of this year's conference is the presence of the first recipient of the James A. Jaksa Scholar-in-Residence visiting professorship, Dr. Richard Johannesen, professor at Northern Illinois University. Sponsored by Western Michigan University's School of Communication and Center for the Study of Ethics in Society, the James A. Jaksa Scholar-in-Residence designation honors James A. Jaksa, emeritus professor of communication at WMU. Jaksa was a founder of the conference and of the Communication Ethics Commission of the National Communication Association.

As the Jaksa Scholar, Dr. Johannesen will co-lead (with Debra Worley of Indiana State University) a workshop on teaching about hate speech and will be available for dialogue with conference participants. On Friday Dr. Johannesen will deliver the conference luncheon keynote address. The title of his address is "A Role for Shame in Communication Ethics." Professor Jaksa will introduce Professor Johannesen.

For information detailing the conference program and activities visit the conference website. Conference registration fees are waived for Communication graduate students and the Friday conference luncheon is free as well. The only cost to students will be meals in the cafeteria. If you are interested in attending, please register with Cynthia Bergeon, conference secretary, at amy.manchester@wmich.edu or Voice: 616 387-3130 by May 24. Be sure to inform her that you are a WMU communication graduate student when you register.
