Teaching Assistants/Thurgood Marshalls Participate in 2002 Departmental Training and Orientation

Prior to the start of the fall 2002 semester, the School of Communication held a graduate student orientation and teaching assistant training workshop for incoming departmental teaching assistants and Thurgood Marshall recipients. This year the training took place on August 29 and 30. This year's workshop was planned and conducted by Becky Halstead and Amy Jackson, TA mentors for the academic year. Shani Clark, the Thurgood Marshall mentor, assisted with the program. Some sessions were lead by faculty and staff, while the mentors facilitated other sessions. Students were able to express their questions about teaching and strategies were discussed regarding classroom expectations and interactions. Participants also received a tour of their offices and an orientation to campus buildings. In addition, Amy and Becky prepared an extensive training manual and resource book for the students.
The department TA training allowed the TA and Thurgood Marshall students a chance to get acquainted with each other before classes actually began. It was an insightful experience and it is another example how the Communications School goes the "extra mile" in student development.
