We welcome you to the School of Communication, Western Michigan University. If your particular personal and professional needs can be met by pursuing a masters degree in communication, becoming a major or minor in the School of Communication or by taking courses in the school as electives, you will find our faculty and staff eager to assist you. We invite you to talk informally with faculty about our courses and programs or you can meet with our graduate or undergraduate advisors to discuss in more detail how a program in communication might meet your needs. At the graduate level, we offer a masters in communication. At the undergraduate level, we offer eight different majors, all of which are tailored to specific professional goals.

Graduate - M.A. in Communication

Undergraduate - B.A. in:

Communication Studies
A major designed for students exploring a broad, integrated program that includes work in several of our program offerings.
Film, Video, and Media Studies (FVM)
Academic study of mass media with technical application in our film and video production training facilities.(application form)
Interpersonal Communication
A major excellent for students interested in social service careers in which knowledge and ability in interpersonal relations is critical to success.
Journalism
This Major offers a combination of liberal arts background and professional training in journalism and is designed to prepare informed and responsible journalists to assume the challenging role demanded of them in the 21 st century.
Organizational Communication
A major that emphasizes preparation for working in a variety of public or private organizations in numerous roles, such as management training or corporate communication .
Public Relations
A major that offers an excellent integrated approach of several academic disciplines to prepare students for positions in this expanding field. (application form)
Telecommunication and Information Management
Provides the knowledge and training for positions in telecommunications management. The rapid expansion of telecommunication systems will result in increased job opportunities in this growing field. (application form)

Undergraduate Minors in:

Communication
An excellent complement to any professional major in Arts and Sciences, Business, Health and Human Services, Education or Engineering .
Journalism
An excellent minor for students wanting to develop and emphasize their writing skills and provides students with basic skills related to the profession of journalism.
Secondary Communication Education
Available only to students who are English majors in the Secondary Education curriculum interested in teaching speech communication in secondary schools.
