Courses I Teach:

JRN 102 - Introduction to News Writing

Introduction to News Writing focuses on reporting and writing for newspapers. The course emphasizes basic news writing skills, including news story organization, structure and AP style. The course also provides an introduction to news reporting and interviewing techniques. In this writing-intensive course, students critique news stories written by professional journalists and other class members.

JRN 200 - Journalism Research

Journalism Research focuses on gathering, selecting and synthesizing information from sources used in journalism research. The course emphasizes the research techniques needed to obtain information from the World Wide Web, online databases, government documents, public records and personal interviews. The course stresses a systematic approach for researching news issues and a critical analysis of standard newsgathering practices. Journalism Research adheres to the professional practices and standards of journalism. The course emphasizes fair, thorough and accurate reporting of the news as well as the importance of meeting deadlines.

JRN 200 - Journalism Research (Online)

The online version of Journalism Research (JRN 2000) features online lectures created using presentation software, Web-based instructional exercises, chat rooms for discussing course content, a bulletin board for posting course-related information, and a Web page for publishing students' news stories online. The course Web site also offers students access to listings of Web-based journalism research tools and resources. This course is offered through the School of Distance Education.
