Undergraduate Scholarships

Eligibility for each award is listed below. Awards for fall and spring will be made before the end of the previous spring semester.  Monies for the awards will be disbursed with half of the award credited to the student's account at the start of the fall and the spring semesters. Unless award relates to intern teaching or awardee is graduating in fall semester, award amounts not listed will be determined annually.

To be considered for scholarships with financial need criteria, you must have submitted a FAFSA application- The federal school code for WMU is 002330.

Deadline for 2008-09 awards was March 3, 2008.
The application form is available between December 1 and March 3.

Margaret Isobel Black Scholarship

  • Award limited to incoming first-year students, community college transfer students, or current WMU students who are graduates of Warren Consolidated School District
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Tuition provided at WMU rates for classes taken at WMU. If studying abroad, tuition to another college or agency to be paid by awardee. Remission of WMU credits still apply.
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication.
  • Full tuition, fees and books per academic year (fall/spring only).

Jane Blackburn Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduates in Elementary Education

  • Enrolled in the Early Elementary Education curriculum

Agnes Robb Bouyoucos International Internship Fund for the College of Education

  • Enrolled full-time in the College of Education with the intention of a study abroad internship
  • Enrolled in the teacher preparation curriculum within the College of Education
  • Preference is given to students who demonstrate financial need     

Lofton Burge Educational Scholarship

  • Junior or senior status
  • Enrolled in the Elementary Education curriculum

Lofton and Georgiann Burge Scholarship for Undergraduates in Elementary Education

  • Junior or senior status
  • Enrolled in Early Elementary Education curriculum

Carolyn L. Burnett Endowment for Teacher Training

  • Awarded to full-time undergraduate students enrolled in a teaching internship
  • Students shall demonstrate financial need

Katherine Pratt Burrell Education Scholarship

  • Junior or senior status
  • Enrolled full-time in a program leading to teacher certification
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference given to female students    

Kelly Carman Memorial Scholarship

  • Junior, senior or graduate student
  • Enrolled full-time majoring in Early Childhood Education and/or Elementary Education
  • Preference given to non-traditional students
  • Renewable depending on student year

Dorothy H. and Cora Hurd Charles Scholarship

  • All students enrolled in a College of Education curriculum are eligible

Patricia A. Chisholm Endowment for Theatre Education

  • Must be a U.S. citizen, resident of Michigan – preferably Southwest Michigan
  • Preference to junior or senior
  • Preference to students who have a teaching emphasis in speech and/or social studies
  • Must display “ideal” teacher qualities

Herman and Erna Muhle Christof Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Preference to community college transfers with at least 30 hours accumulated at community college
  • Enrolled full time in teacher training curricula
  • Preference to underrepresented populations
  • Preference for demonstrated financial need
  • Minimum 2.75 GPA
  • May be renewable

College of Education Scholarship for Kalkaska County

  • First year, full time student
  • Enrolled in teacher training curricula
  • Preference for graduates of Kalkaska County public high school (Kalkaska and Forest Area High)
  • Academic merit is primary consideration
  • May be renewed

College of Education Undergraduate Scholarship

  • Cannot hold WMU merit-based renewable scholarship concurrently (i.e., WMU Academic, HEIS, Medallion, etc.)
  • Incoming freshmen, community college transfer students and current WMU students are eligible

College of Education Scholarship in Teacher Education

  • Full-time student pursuing teacher training
  • Preference giving to non-traditional students 25 years of age or older
  • Must hold a minimum of 3.0 GPA at the time of application
  • Preference given to students with financial need
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication and available funds

Velma and Harry Cotterill Endowment for the College of Education

  • Awarded to students in their student teaching internship semester
  • Preference given to students that demonstrate financial need
  • Preference given to students who plan to make K-12 teaching their primary, full-time profession
  • Preference given to candidates who are US citizens, and intend to teach in the USA after graduation

Robert and Elizabeth Cutler Endowment Scholarship

  • Full-time junior
  • Must hold a 2.5 GPA
  • Must be pursuing a teaching career in math or science
  • Preference to non-traditional students
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Renewable up to one year

Delia M. and Dora D. DeMaso Scholarship

  • First year, full time student
  • Pursuing degree in teacher training
  • Preference for demonstrated financial need
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • May be renewed

Zora and Frank Ellsworth Scholarship

  • Junior or senior status, enrolled full-time
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must be enrolled in Elementary Education curriculum
  • Must demonstrate a career purpose in education
  • Must have and maintain a 3.0 GPA
  • Preference given to Latin majors
  • May be renewed up to one year

Forgrave-Anderson Scholarship

  • Enrolled in the College of Education with an interest in teaching K-12 science and math
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication

John W. and Evelyn M. Fry English Scholarship Fund

  • Available to all College of Education students

Fund for the Advancement of Minorities in Education (FAME)

  • May be incoming first-year students, community college transfer students, or current WMU students
  • Enrolled full-time
  • Incoming freshmen must be enrolled in Pre-Education (PED) curriculum
  • Transfer students or current WMU students must be enrolled in program leading to teacher certification
  • Special consideration given to students of under-represented populations
  • Full tuition and fees for fall and spring only.  Total of eight semesters. Tuition provided at WMU rates for classes taken at WMU. If studying abroad, tuition to another college or agency to be paid by awardee. Remission of WMU credits still apply.

Alfred Griffin Scholarship

  • Senior status
  • Enrolled full-time in Elementary Education curriculum
  • Resident of the State of Michigan
  • Preference given to African American and Native American students

Lucille J. Haines Education Scholarship

  • Enrolled in Early Childhood Education

Marion I. Hall Endowment Scholarship

  • Full or part-time student
  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference given to students preparing for careers in elementary or secondary education (teacher certification programs)

Everett L. and Marian Holden Endowed Scholarship

  • Full time student in their teaching internship semester
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Academic merit is secondary consideration

Leon M. and Johanna Bolte Hopkins Endowed Scholarship in Education

  • Full time student majoring in Elementary Education
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA
  • Preference for demonstrated financial need
  • May be renewable

E. Fern Hudson Scholarship

  • Junior or senior status
  • Enrolled full-time in a College of Education curriculum
  • Applicant must demonstrate financial need
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA    

Rose M. Iciek Memorial Scholarship for Elementary and Secondary Education

  • First-year undergraduate student majoring in Pre-Education, planning to teach either at the Elementary or Secondary level
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Renewable of award available upon reapplication

Janet M. Jones

  • Must be enrolled full-time
  • Major in Elementary Education and a minor of Early Childhood
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication
  • Must demonstrate financial need

Doris A. Lance Scholarship

  • Awarded to a full-time or part-time student
  • Must be enrolled in Secondary Education in Business (Business Education) in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Recipients selected on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need, and must not have been censured for a major violation of University regulations
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication

Sylvia Jean Lovat Endowed Scholarship for EarlyChildhood Education

  • Enrolled full-time
  • Early Childhood Professional Education Program
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Special consideration given to students that have overcome socioeconomic or educational disadvantages or first generation college student
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication

Shirley Mills Study Abroad Fund

  • Junior or senior status
  • Preference given to female student enrolled in teacher preparation curriculum
  • Pursuing a undergraduate degree with the intention of a study abroad internship
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

Lucille Abbott Nobbs/ABE Endowed Scholarship

  • Members of, or a direct descendent of a member of the Alpha Beta Epsilon (ABE) WMU Sorority will receive first preference for this scholarship. Applicants are responsible for indicating membership and/or familial relationship on the application and providing verification if necessary.
  • Junior or senior status undergraduate student or graduate student
  • Enrolled full-time in a teacher education program
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Award is solely for WMU tuition, fees, and book expenses only.
  • Renewal of award available up reapplication (two consecutive years)

Florence E. and Vernon A. Martin Prestigious Education Scholarship

  • Preference to College of Education students who graduated from Pentwater High School

Beulah and Harold McKee Scholarship in Early Childhood Education

  • Must be enrolled full-time in the Early Childhood Education program
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Preference will be given to Kalamazoo County, and particularly greater Kalamazoo, high school graduates (Loy Norrix, Kalamazoo Central, Hackett Catholic Central, Kalamazoo Christian, Comstock, Parchment, Portage Northern, Portage Central)
  • Primary consideration will be given to graduates of Parchment High School
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication until recipient graduates

McKinley Financial Foundation Endowed Scholarship

  • Awarded to full-time incoming freshman student
  • Preference given to African American students
  • Must have and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication
  • Awarded in the College of Education in odd years (i.e. fall 2007, fall 2009)

E. Arthur and Lorna Pierre Scholarship

  • Enrolled full-time, first-year student
  • Preference given to graduates of Waterford Public Schools
  • Special consideration for graduates of Muskegon Senior High School
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Awarded in the College of Education in even years (i.e., fall 2008, fall 2010)

Marcia Vincent and Avis Leo “Mike” Sebaly Scholarship

  • Full-time student
  • Majoring in elementary education
  • Preference given to student who demonstrates financial need
  • Minimum of 2.5 GPA
  • Renewable up to four years provided the student remains in elementary education and funds are available

Samuel Kenneth Smart, Jr. Scholarship

  • Enrolled full-time in the Elementary or Secondary Education curriculum which will prepare them to become school instructors of Science and/or Mathematics
  • Must demonstrate financial aid need
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA

State Farm Foundation Unendowed Teacher Scholarship

  • Full-time junior
  • Preference shall be given to minorities who wish to pursue a teaching career in an urban school district
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Renewal of award for one year

Merze Tate Scholarship

  • Enrolled full-time or part-time, graduate or undergraduate
  • Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate financial need (including, but not limited to, deserving foreign students who are in need of financial assistance)

Mabel Blough Thompson Endowed Scholarship

  • Full-time student
  • Incoming freshman from rural area preferred
  • Majoring in elementary education
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA
  • Renewal of award available upon reapplication

The Jackson Legacy Program and Other Scholarships

Women's Education Coalition Grant Program - This grant is a cooperative venture of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kalamazoo Network and the YWCA of Kalamazoo. Grants are available to women residing in Kalamazoo, Barry, Calhoun, Allegan, St. Joseph and VanBuren counties who are U.S. Citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens (green card holders). Priority is given to underemployed, working mothers. Applicants must be adult women who have had a significant break in their formal education and can demonstrate how post-high school education will help them reach their goals of increased financial independence. Applications are available in the Office of Teacher Certification, 2104 Sangren, and are due May 15, 2008.
