The Department of Teaching, Learning,and Educational Studies participated in the second annual WMU Day at the Capitol which featured dozens of WMU programs and projects.

Allison Downey, professor of elementary education, took second place, of 600 entries, in the Great Lakes SongwritingContest for her song “All That Matters”.

BetaIota Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi is hosted a professional development conference on March 21 for future teachers. The conference, "Educating Our Educators: A Workshop for Future Teachers", featured opening speaker Jen Haberling, the MichiganTeacher of the Year. The conference, which included lunch, costs $20 for Kappa Delta Pi members, and $25 for non-Kappa members.
Dr. Karen Feathers is an award-winning educator internationally known for
her work in literacy. Dr. Feathers is coordinator of the
Reading, Language and Literature program in the Division of Teacher
Education at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Dr. Feathers has prominent publications in the field of literacy,
both research articles
and instructional material. Her research has attracted prestigious
funding support from the Michigan Department of Education, Verizon,
and The U.S. Department of Education. Her
current work with colleague Dr. Poonam Arya focuses on ways that reading success is
affected by the structures of text that readers view. Sensitive eye
movement measuring
equipment has revealed the reading strategies of urban students
labeled “at risk,” yielding promising insights about what these
young readers need in order to be effective, efficient readers.

Allison Downey, professor of elementary education, took second place, of 600 entries, in the Great Lakes Songwriting Contest for her song “All That Matters”. The song, from her sophomore album Across the Sea (2008), is about a 12 year old girl going to her first dance. She performed at the Winner’s Showcase with John Austin, her husband and WMU professor, on Feb. 7. Another song from Downey’s Across the Sea is featured on the Standing Together compilation. The album features original tracks, including Downey’s “Blue Deep Aegean”, from 17 artists and was released Feb. 11. Proceeds from the album sales go directly to Grand Rapids Public Schools and Ronald McDonald House Charities. Standing Together can be purchased at West Michigan McDonald’s restaurants, Meijer, Schuler Books & Music, and Barnes & Noble stores.
