Teacher/Administrator Certification

Validity of Michigan Certificates

All initial Michigan Provisional certificates, Provisional Renewal certificates, Professional Education certificates, Interim Occupational or Occupational Education certificates, expire on Jun. 30 of the appropriate year, determined by the month and year of issuance.  The initial Michigan Provisional certificate and the Interim Occupational certificate are valid for 5½ to 6½ years, depending on the month of issuance.  A Provisional/Interim Occupational Renewal is valid for 2½ to 3½ years, depending on the month of issuance.

Persons receiving a Professional Education Certificate or an Occupational Education Certificate will be subject to the provisions of Rule 390.1135 requiring renewal of the certificate every five years (called the “ Application for Advanced Certificate Renewal” ).  Renewals may be accomplished by earning six credit credit hours of appropriate academic credit which are offered by state board approved institutions included in the Directory of Michigan Institutions of Higher Education that list 4-year public institutions, 2-year public institutions and independent colleges and universities; credit offered by a regionally accredited college or university out-of-state, or the equivalent in SB-CEU's, or a combination thereof.

SB-CEU's are State Board approved in-service/workshop/professional credits equivalent to college credit credit hours when used for teacher professional certificate renewal and/or occupational education certificate renewal.  The formula is:

3 SB-Continuing Education Units = 1 credit hour credit

Candidates for advanced certificate renewal of the Professional and/or Occupational Certificate apply directly to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).  Applications are available from the MDE at (517) 373-3310 or on the Web in the section for Most Requested/Teacher License Application at www.michigan.gov/mde/.

The Continuing/Permanent or Full Vocational Certificate automatically remains valid as long as the holder serves in an "educational capacity" for a minimum of 100 days (need not be consecutive days) in any given five-year period.  The Certificate(s) automatically lapse on any given day that the holder has failed to serve in an educational capacity for a minimum of 100 days in the immediately preceding five years.
