Earning State Board Continuing Education Units for serving as a student intern mentor

Spring 2010 intern teaching to kids

Teachers who serve as a mentor for a student intern are eligible to receive three (3) State Board Continuing Education Units (SB-CEUs) for his/her work as a mentor for a full placement period (not less than eight weeks). Teachers who mentor more than one teacher during the semester can only receive a maximum of three SB-CEUs for the semester. The mentor teacher is required to attend mentor meetings on a regular basis and to perform all of the required responsibilities of a mentor. A Participant Verification Form signed by the building principal is required for verification. This form may be duplicated as needed.

A maximum of 9.0 SB-CEUs earned as a Supervisor/Mentor to Intern Teachers can be used toward advanced certificate renewal in each five-year renewal period.

Teachers who wish to earn three (3) SB-CEUs for serving as a mentor this semester should complete the attached SB-CEU Participant Verification Form and obtain the required signature of the Building Principal. This form should be returned along with the $15.00 required fee (payable to WMU) for the SB-CEU certificate to the Office of Field Placements, ATTN: Joanne Barretta, Western Michigan University, 1903 W. Michigan Ave, Kalamazoo, MI  49008-5240 by May 17, 2010. Requests received in our office after May 16, 2010 will be returned to you.

As part of the approval process, we are also required to submit an evaluation of the program. Please complete the enclosed Evaluation Form and return it to us with the Verification Form.

Please note: WMU is not authorized to award SB-CEUs for a teacher serving as a New Teacher Mentor. Please contact your school district to see if this option is available through that office.
