Teacher Certification Programs

The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers two majors and three minors for students pursuing degrees leading to teacher certification or endorsements in the State of Michigan.

The majors offered are health education and physical education. Successful completion of these programs leads to K-12 certification in the State of Michigan.

The three minor areas of study are: health education (6-12), secondary physical education (6-12) and special physical education.

Extensive field practica are incorporated in several courses within the curricula. Students interested in either the health education or physical education curriculum options should enroll in either HPER 1550: Foundations of Health Education or HPER 1500: Foundations of Physical Education during their first or second semester at Western Michigan University.
