The health education Program prepares entry-level professionals through rigorous course work, practical field experiencesand professional and personal development. The balance of these approaches will enable candidates to develop the knowledge, dispositionand skills to successfully comprehend health concepts; act as a health resource; assess health needs; plan, implementand evaluate health programs for diverse groups; collaborate with others to coordinate activities; and communicate and advocate for health education concerns. Program faculty are committed to preparing candidates for the profession; generating a new body of knowledge; and serving the university, communityand profession.

The Health Education Teacher (HET) Preparation Program:

  • Prepares teacher candidates for certification to teach in public schools and to work in other health education settings
  • Recognized nationally as an approved program by the American Association for Health Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (2006) 
  • First HET program in Michigan to be approved by the Michigan Department of Education (2000)
  • It also is the only HETP major program in Michigan that prepares candidates for K-12 certification. It also prepares minors for 6-12 certification.
  • Michigan Test for Teacher/Administrator Certification (MTTC): Health Education pass rate of 98.9 percent for first-time test takers
  • The Health Education Teacher Preparation Program was reaccredited in August 2008 and fully recognized by the American Association for Health Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education

Outside the classroom

Eligible students are invited to participate in Eta Sigma Gamma, a national award-winning health education honorary which sponsors numerous health related education, serviceand research projects.
