StudentAdmission to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation

Any student at Western Michigan University desiring a career in Health, Physical Education, Recreation or Athletic Training can enroll in beginning level (HPER 1110, 1500, 1520, 1530, 1550, 1700, etc.) courses.  However, you are required to meet with an academic advisor to declare your intent to enroll in the curriculum and submit an application for admission to the College of Education and to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation to proceed in the curriculum.

Admission Procedures

All students who intend to complete a major or minor degree offered by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) must apply to the department for admission to the program.  An application can be obtained on this site or from the HPER Department on the fourth floor of the Student Recreation Center.  It is the responsibility of the student to submit the application in compliance with the requirements outlined below. Students must complete the following requirements prior to application:

Recreation majors or minors

1. Completion of 35 hours of college/university credit.
2. Completion of HPER 1700 with a grade of “C” or better.

Applications for admission to the College of Education are available through the College of Education Office of Admissions and Advising. The office also coordinates academic advisement for students enrolled in all undergraduate curricula and advises post-baccalaureate students seeking initial teacher certification. Students in non-teaching curricula (exercise science, community health, athletic training or recreation) are not required to apply for admission to the College of Education.
