Congratulations to Dr. Jody Brylinsky, the Varsity "W" Club Board of Directors 2010 Woman of the Year!

Coaching the Elite Athlete 
Dr. Jim Lewis, professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, visited the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in November to discuss and assess their Graduate Sport Management Program. The UKM Sport Management program is directed by Mohd Taib Harun, who received his master’s degree from the WMU Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. UKM is a comprehensive university of 28,000 students located in Bangi, Malaysia, about 45 miles from Kuala Lumpur. Sport management is part of the Sport and Recreation Program housed in the Faculty of Education (College of Education). Dr. Lewis visited with faculty members in the various departments in education and experienced Malaysian culture while touring Kuala Lumpur, as well as the east coast of Malaysia.
Malaysia has a highly educated population with 21 universities funded by the government as well as a large number of private universities. WMU has a Memorandum of Understanding with UKM. Anyone interested in studying at UKM should contact Dr. Lewis or the Diether Haenicke Institute for Global Education.
Dr. Debra Berkey, professor, has been named the Michigan Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance University Educator of the Year. The finalists all had impressive credentials; however Berkey’s accomplishments, community leadership, and dedication to the Physical Education profession led the committee to select her. Berkey was honored at the Annual State Convention on Nov. 12 in Traverse City.
