Fast Facts

  • Undergraduate programs include career and technical education, dietetics, family studies, interior design and textile and apparel Studies.
  • The department offers two masters degrees: one in Family and Consumer Sciences with focus areas in family life education, textile and apparel studies and dietetics; and another in Career and Technical Education.
  • FCS faculty members are currently addressing issues relating to grandparenting, aging and self-employment, childhood obesity, K-12 teacher shortages, retailing in rural communities and sustainability in the built environment.
  • Faculty has conducted or is conducting projects in Bolivia, Brazil, Ireland, Norway, the Mariana Islands, Turkey, the United Kingdom.
  • FCS faculty members serve on six editorial boards of scholarly journals, are occasional reviewers for nine scholarly journals, review submissions for conferences and actively serve in leadership positions in numerous professional associations.
  • Career and Technical Education was the first career and technical education program in the state to receive approval for a post-bachelor’s teaching certification program.
  • FCS faculty established 2+2 agreements with community colleges to provide a seamless transition for students to obtain a bachelor’s degree (10 partnerships in Family Studies/Child Development; 14 partnerships in Career and Technical Education).
  • FCS faculty provides ongoing technical support and expertise to state legislators and media in family and consumer issues.
  • FCS has 19 endowments for student scholarships and faculty research support (a market value of approximately $700,000).
  • Family and Consumer Sciences has 5 active student organizations including Kappa Omicron Nu, National Honor Society for the Human Sciences.
  • Undergraduate degrees in family studies, child and family development and the CTE MA degree can be taken on-line.
  • Family and Consumer Sciences began as the Department of “Domestic Science” and was one of the five original departments established with the opening of Western State Normal School.
