A special thank you to the following past members of DCSP Coordinating Committee. This is what they had to say about their experience on DCSP:

Tara Lasilla (2003-05)
Volunteer Coordinator 2003-04
Committee Chair/Executive Secretary 2004-05

Serving on the dietetic community service program committee for the past two years was a remarkable experience for me. I have gained valuable volunteer and leadership experience through serving on the DCSP. I have learned the importance of teamwork and gained indispensable friendships. It has helped me to build both my professional and personal life. I have gained essential skills that will be utilized in my future career. My communication skills with peers and mentors have been enhanced. I have deeply grown as an individual by participating in this program and I encourage all dietetic students to become involved. Thank you to everyone who has influenced my life in such a positive way!

I was lucky to become a part of the DCSP coordinating committee towards the end of its development and during the past two years I was able to see it grow into a very beneficial program to students in the dietetics community. Last year I was able to learn what the program was all about and how a small team works together to produce a more effective program by meeting, giving and receiving feedback, evaluating and changing small systems that made the organization work as a whole. It was a lot of work, but as this year has passed, I saw the benefits because we now have a great program that takes only a small amount of upkeep. Being a part of the DCSP team has been an incredibly valuable experience for me. I have learned as much from DCSP as I have from my classes here at WMU and because of DCSP I feel that I am going to be a valuable asset to any team that I am a part of in the future. I learned about leadership and how to delegate tasks as well as to listen to ideas and the importance of sharing responsibility in a group. I learned administrative skills and communication skills not only with my peers, but with dietitians around the community and the great advantages of technology as a tool for group organization. These are just a few of the things that I have gained from being a part of the committee. I am very glad that DCSP was a part of my college career. I met wonderful people and had a great faculty leader that I learned so much from. My college career would not have been as beneficial to me if I had not become a part of DCSP.

Kara Boley (2000-02)
Serving on the committee for the Dietetic Community Service Program was a very beneficial experience for me. I learned a great deal about working with a team of people and delegating responsibility. Watching our ideas grow into an established program was a great learning experience! I gained knowledge about the value of networking, the importance of having policies and procedures and the benefit of "meeting minutes". I believe that in the future I will be a valuable part of other professional committees in the area of dietetics because of my experience with this program. I am now skilled at taking brief and accurate "meeting minutes", and have become more aware of ways to advertise and promote events and other programs. Being involved with the Dietetic Community Service Program, either as a committee member or as a volunteer, is an excellent way for dietetics students to gain knowledge and experience. I would recommend it to everyone.

Lori Walters (2000-02)
The first year, fall 2000 involved a lot of work. We had to contact the mentors/volunteer sites to find out what places would allow students to volunteer. We wrote letters to the mentors, made address labels, constructed mentor/mentee guidelines for the participants, handed out applications and advertised the program through word of mouth and brochures. It was a rewarding year when the program was ready for participants. I learned several things by serving on the committee. Recording meeting minutes was a new experience, producing a brochure that was understandable and effective to our audience. Learning to speak with professionals around the community and networking through professionals. Talking in front of students (which I never liked, yet became accustomed to). Most of all I learned about being a part of a committee and the roles each person plays within that committee. It was a pleasure to be on the committee for the Dietetic Community Service Program. I learned helpful information, which otherwise I wouldn't have been exposed to. I am willing to become a part of another committee in the future after having a positive experience with DCSP.
