
Dr. Robert Leneway, associate professor in educational technology, and Susan Westoff-Reahm, a recent graduate of the educational technology online master’s program will present a paper on November 21 at E-Learn 2008 in Las Vegas. The research paper is titled “Effects of Gaming on the Gender Gap in Enrolling in High School Computer Classes” and was selected as the outstanding research paper of the five day conference and will be formally recognized at the closing keynote. The World Conference on E-Learning in Corporate, Government, Healthcare, & Higher Education is an international conference organized by the Association for the Advancement of Computing in Education and co-sponsored by the International Journal on E-Learning.
Dr. Gary Miron, professor, published “The shifting notion of ‘publicness’ in public education” in the recent Handbook of Education Politics and Policy (New York: Routledge.)
DeAnna Burt, student in Educational Leadership Ph.D. with a concentration in Higher Education, received a 2008-09 Association for the Study of Higher Education/Lumina Fellowship. The program promotes innovative scholarship by creating an intergenerational community of scholars who examine social, institutional, and policy barriers to opportunity and student success. DeAnna's dissertation is titled "African American student persistence: A study of the effects of an intrusive advising intervention". Deanna's advisor is Dr. Andrea Beach.

Congratulations to Dr. Liliana Rodriquez, alumnae of evaluation, measurement and research, and board president of the American Evaluation Association, for receiving the AEA Marcia Guttentag Award. The award is presented to a promising new evaluator during the first five years after completion of his or her Master's or Doctoral degree and whose work is consistent with the "AEA Guiding Principles for Evaluators"
The faculty have revised their assessment system for the programs in Educational Leadership. The new assessment system is directly linked to the standards of the Educational Leadership Constituent Council, the professional organization overseeing the preparation of leaders for K-12 schools and districts. The newly designed assessments are performance-based and use detailed rubrics to guide students and faculty.

A high level multi-sector delegation from the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands met with researchers from Western Michigan University to discuss on-going projects directed at the childhood obesity epidemic that has captured the attention of governments around the world. A multidisciplinary team of College of Education faculty have teamed up with the CNMI public school system to offer a program to primary caregivers that has the potential to impact childhood obesity through household behavioral changes. These faculty are Mozhdeh Bruss, Joseph Morris, Linda Dannison, Tim Michael, Brooks Applegate, Andrea Smith, and Judy McGowan representing dietetics, adult education, psychology, exercise science, early childhood, parent education, program development and evaluation, research methodology, and teacher education. Other faculty members including Lonnie Duncan, Suzan Ayers, and James Lewis from the College of Education and Amy Curtis from the College of Health and Human Services will participate in upcoming meetings discussing multifaceted and multilevel aspects of childhood obesity in the CNMI and exploring strategies for its reduction and prevention. The project is supported by the Larry L. Hillblom Foundation, CNMI Public School System, and Western Michigan University.

Muchmore, associate professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Educational Studies; Dr. Sue Poppink, assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, Research, and Technology; and Dr. Ronald A. Crowell, professor emeritus, Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Studies.
