Master's Programs

Marriage and Family Therapy

Introduction

The master of arts degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy is offered by the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology in collaboration with the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. This two-year, full-time program will grant admission to a select number of students per year. The curriculum is designed to meet accreditation standards of the accrediting body of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). Marriage and Family Therapists treat a wide array of couple and family-related problems, as well as provide educational, consultative, and preventive services. MFTs work in diverse settings from community agencies, group practices, inpatient and outpatient settings, churches, medical settings, and various private practice arrangements.

Marriage and family therapy presentationProgram opportunities

  • The program will integrate current theoretical, clinical, and research developments in the areas of Marriage and Family Therapy and the study of families.

  • Students will initially receive direct clinical supervision on-site from qualified program faculty who are AAMFT-Approved Supervisors in CECP's Center for Counseling and Psychological Services.

  • Off-site placements in the community will provide opportunities for students to continue their clinical training as they progress in the program.

  • The program is offered in well-established academic departments that also include training for community counselors, counseling psychologists, school counselors, rehabilitation counselors, and family life educators.

  • A research thesis option is available for those interested in conducting an original research project, which may be especially appealing for those considering further study at the doctoral level.

  • Core MFT full-time faculty and part-time MFT faculty have published widely in their professional areas and have been actively involved in regional and national professional organizations.

Curriculum and Application Information

Students will be required to complete 500 face-to-face direct clinical hours, of which half, or 250 hours must be with couples or families. Students will receive clinical supervision at the minimum at a rate of one hour of supervision for every five hours of direct service, for a total of 100 hours of supervision. Supervision will be provided in a variety of formats including live supervision using one-way mirrors, video supervision, and case consultations in both group and individual formats.

Multicultural and diversity

The Departments of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology and Family Consumer Sciences recognize the importance of addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse society. To that end, both departments strive to increase the educational opportunities of diverse student populations and to create an atmosphere where the values and concerns of racial/ethnic minorities and diverse populations receive attention and respect. These issues are integrated into courses throughout the curriculum, as well as developed more fully through special topics courses.
