Counselor Education

Master of Arts in Counselor Education

The program options leading to a Master of Arts in Counselor Education are designed to prepare individuals for entry level positions in college counseling, community counseling, school counseling, and rehabilitation counseling/teaching in a variety of educational and counseling settings. The program options are:

School Counseling

The school counseling program is CACREP accredited and is designed to prepare individuals to function as school counselors at one of three levels (grades K-8, 6-12 or K-12) in public and private schools in accordance with the Endorsement Rules and Teacher Certification Code of the State of Michigan, and Public Act 288 r.e. School Counselors.

Elementary School Counseling a, b, d (grades K-8)

Enables certified teachers to be endorsed as elementary school counselors.

Secondary School Counseling a, b, d (grades 6-12)

Enables certified teachers to be endorsed as secondary school counselors.

K-12 School Counseling a, b, d (grades K-12)

Enables certified teachers to be endorsed as elementary and secondary counselors.

School Counselor License a, c, d (grades K-12)

Enables individuals without teacher certification to be licensed as school counselors.

Community Counseling

The community counseling program a, d trains counselors in the delivery of counseling, educational and consultation services to public and private community-based agencies and organizations. The program meets the educational requirements for the licensed professional counselor credential (LPC) in Michigan and is accredited by CACREP.

College Counseling

The College Counseling program a, d emphasizes counseling with college students and prepares students for careers as counselors in community colleges, four-year colleges and universities. The program meets the educational requirements for the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Michigan and for the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accreditation.

Rehabilitation Counseling

Rehabilitation Counseling a, e is offered as part of the Rehabilitation Counseling/Teaching program (RCTM) which is jointly administered by the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology and the Department of Blindness and Low Vision Studies. The Rehabilitation Counseling/Teaching program promotes quality rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities through the education of personnel who serve as rehabilitation counselors and rehabilitation teachers. The program meets the educational requirements for certification as a Rehabilitation Counselor.

a Leads to Michigan license as a counselor.
b Leads to endorsement as a counselor on a current, valid Michigan teaching certificate.
c Prepares students who do not hold a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate for school counselor license recommendation in Michigan.

e Accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE)
