The department offers three programs at the master's level. Most programs require a minimum of 48 credit hours. Each option includes six departmental core courses in addition to required course work specifically related to each program, and the opportunity for some elective choices. Students are admitted to not only the department, but are also admitted to a particular option within the department.
Prospective students are urged to attend department sponsored orientation programs and/or meet with a faculty member prior to making a decision about applying to a particular option. In making this decision, students should be guided by which option will best prepare them for their career choice.
When admission to both The Graduate College and the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology has been finalized, the student and the advisor plan a program of study related to the student's stated option choice and career plans. A change in option choice after acceptance is not only discouraged but requires a strong rationale and justification. Students seeking application should carefully consider the appropriate option choice.
The graduate program may be completed in two years on a full-time year round enrollment basis. Many students find it advantageous to combine graduate work with part-time or full-time employment. Students have found it possible to coordinate class attendance, professional responsibilities, and a carefully planned program of graduate studies that enhance current and future employment options.
