Scholarships & Awards

There are a number of sources of financial aid available to graduate students enrolled Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology programs.

Graduate Assistantships/Doctoral Associateships are available within the department that provide opportunities to gain clinical, teaching, research, and/0r program development experience while also meeting financial needs.

  • Eligibility: Master's and doctoral students. Open to US and international students.
  • Application: CECP Office (3102 Sangren).
  • Deadline: February 15 for new students beginning Fall Semester.
  • Conditions: Twenty hours of work per week in the department. 
  • Typically offered Fall/Spring and Summer I/Summer II

Departmental scholarships and awards:

Robert and Diane Betz Award for Doctoral Studies in Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology

  • Must be a doctoral student in counseling psychology or counselor education in CECP
  • Award may be used to assist with tuition and fees or to support research and travel
  • Two awards are presented annually; one to a doctoral student in counselor education and one to a doctoral student in counseling psychology.

Self nominations (letter of interest and vita) and faculty nominations of students will be accepted for 2008-09 awards through February 7, 2008. Nominations should be sent to the CECP Awards Committee, Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology, 1903 W. Michigan Ave., Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5226. Nominations may also be dropped off at the CECP Office, 3102 Sangren Hall.

Robert O. Brinkerhoff Endowed Scholarship for Human Resource Development

  • Must be a full-time graduate student pursuing a master's degree in human resource development
  • Recipient must have a minimum 3.0 GPA at the time of application
  • Special consideration given to single parents and adult students with experience living or working in diverse environments
  • Scholarship is renewable for a period of up to one year provided student remains a full-time graduate student in human resource development and has satisfactory academic progress.

Kenneth Bullmer Endowed Scholarship for Doctoral Studies in Counseling Psychology

  • Enrolled full-time in the counseling psychology doctoral program within the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology
  • Scholarship is awarded solely on merit
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA
  • May be renewed for one academic year, providing the recipient remains a full-time student in the counseling psychology doctoral program, maintains a 3.5 GPA and has demonstrated satisfactory progress as specified by the Office of Student Financial Aid and monitored by the CECP department

Self nominations (letter of interest, vita and a copy of transcript) will be accepted for Fall 2008 through February 7, 2008. Nominations should be sent to the CECP Awards Committee, Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology, 1903 W. Michigan Ave., Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5226. Nominations may also be dropped off at the CECP Office, 3102 Sangren Hall. Award Amount: $500 for Fall.

Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology (CECP) Alumni/ae Scholarship

  • Must be enrolled full or part time
  • Applicants must demonstrate professional goals and community service goals
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need
  • Must hold and maintain a minimum 3.3 GPA

Two awards are granted annually: one to a master’s level student and one to a doctoral level student in CECP. Applications will be accepted for 2008-09 awards through February 7, 2008. Award Amount: $600 for Fall.

Applicants must have submitted a FAFSA application (http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/) (federal school code for WMU is 002330). In addition, the top portion of the 2008-09 Financial Information Authorization Form (the final section of the College of Education Scholarship Application) must be submitted with all scholarship applications. The College of Education will then send the form to WMU’s Financial Aid Office to verify the information you submitted on the FAFSA form. Nominations should be sent to College of Education Scholarship Program, College of Education Dean’s Office, 1903 W. Michigan Ave., Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5229 (phone 269-387-2960; fax 269-387-2882).  Nominations can also be dropped off at the College Education Dean’s Office, 2306 Sangren Hall.

Arthur and Margaret Manske Outstanding Master's Student in School Counseling Award

  • Award recognizes and honors outstanding master's degree students in school counseling who have demonstrated potential for excellence in the profession
  • All currently enrolled counseling students and those recently completing their degree are eligible for the award.

Faculty nominations of students for this award will be accepted for Fall 2008 through February 7, 2008.
