
Mission: Consistent with a student centered research university and a College of Education that promotes partnerships in the development and delivery of programs, the mission of the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology is to develop competent, ethical and culturally sensitive professionals for counseling and related human resources development roles through graduate education and scholarship. To accomplish this mission, the department offers doctoral training in counseling psychology and counselor education and master’s level training in counseling psychology, counselor education (college counseling; clinical mental health counseling; marriage, couples and family counseling; and school counseling), rehabilitation counseling and rehabilitation counseling/teaching with concentration in blindness, and human resources development. We strive to recruit and retain students of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds from local, state, national and international locations.
The Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology is a graduate department at WMU.
In 1953, the first counselor education degree program at WMU was “Guidance”was established.
In 1964, the unit “Guidance and Personnel Services” was established within the Department of School Services in the School of Education.
In 1969, the Department of Counseling and Personnel was created.
The department’s name was changed to the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology in 1985.
The department has 18 full-time faculty members
Master of Arts degrees offered in the department are in Counseling Psychology, Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling/Teaching, and Human Resources Development.
Doctoral degrees offered in the department are the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and the Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling Psychology (Ph.D.).
The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs accredits the master’s and doctoral programs in counselor education.
The doctoral program in counseling psychology has been accredited by the American Psychological Association since the initial accreditation in 1993.
The Rehabilitation Counseling program and the joint program in Rehabilitation Counseling/Teaching is accredited by The Council on Rehabilitation Education.
The department operates two on-site low cost clinics, one in Kalamazoo and one in Grand Rapids, which provide a variety of counseling services and serve as primary training facilities for master’s and doctoral level students.
The department takes pride in emphasizing the importance of addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse society and many faculty maintain active professional and research interests concerning various aspects of multicultural and diversity studies.
