Center for Counseling and Psychological Services

What are the Centers?

The Centers for Counseling and Psychological Services (CCPS) are a service, training, and research component of the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology. The centers, one in Kalamazoo and one in Grand Rapids, provide practical training opportunities for graduate students by offering affordable mental health services to residents of southwestern Michigan.

Master's and doctoral degree students affiliated with the department provide professional counseling and psychological services at the centers. Graduate student counselors are supervised by faculty members who are professional counselors and/or psychologists.

Faculty members and graduate students conduct research at the centers. Special facilities and advanced technology are available to support research into many interactive processes.

Whom do we serve?

Counseling and psychological services are provided at low cost to children, adolescents, and adults residing in southwestern Michigan. Persons desiring services may contact the Kalamazoo or Grand Rapids centers directly for an appointment. All matters discussed are considered confidential.

Services are provided to persons regardless of social class, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, age, gender, race, ethnicity, disability, or level of education.

Ethical standards of the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association govern behavior of all student counselors, center staff members, and supervisors.

While most clients are self-referred, referrals from other professionals and agencies are possible. Contact the centers for additional information.

What services do we offer?

Individual counseling for persons experiencing personal, educational, or vocational concerns is the primary service offered by the staff throughout the year. Other services such as marital/family therapy, group counseling and psychological assessment are offered periodically. When problems presented are not within the staff's scope of practice, appropriate referral sources are identified for clients.
