HPER Curricula

Health, Physical Education and Recreation Curricula

For those students who do not wish to pursue a teaching degree, the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) offers several options:

Exercise Science – Students majoring in Exercise Science complete courses that focus on the scientific study of exercise as a means of preventing and rehabilitating health problems and prolonging quality of life. This major prepares students for careers in a variety of settings, including corporate, hospital, cardiac rehabilitation, and commercial fitness. Eligible students are invited to participate in Phi Epsilon Kappa professional honorary.

Community Health Education –This major or minor prepares students to work as health educators in the field of public health. Students learn how to apply skills (assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation) to prevent a variety of community-wide health problems, such as infant mortality, heart disease and cancer, violence, smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, and teen pregnancy. Health educators are employed in public health departments, hospitals, and non-profit community agencies (e.g., American Cancer Society, drug prevention agencies). Eligible students are invited to participate in Eta Sigma Gamma, a national award-winning health education honorary which sponsors numerous health related education, service, and research projects.

Athletic Training – The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly educated and skilled professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, the athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, sports medicine clinics, professional sports programs and other athletic health care settings. Admission to the Athletic Training Professional Program (ATPP) is selective. To meet eligibility for the ATPP, prospective students must first obtain admission to the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and complete all pre-program requirements.

Recreation – The Recreation major or minor offers a variety of courses, experiences, and guidance that allow students to prepare for professional careers in community, campus, outdoor, commercial, government, or private settings. The Recreation major and minor are designed to prepare students to assume leadership and/or administrative roles in their chosen emphasis area. Eligible students are invited to participate in Phi Epsilon Kappa professional honorary.

Coaching - This minor prepares individuals to coach in public and private school settings. Course work is based on national standards for the training of coaches. Students are placed in area schools during their required practicum.
