
The Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER)
offers six undergraduate major options. Two of these lead to teacher
certification; the remaining four are non-teacher certification
curricula. In addition, there are six minors available.
All students who intend to complete a major or minor offered by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation (HPER) will be designated as pre-HPER. The following criteria must be met prior to application to the HPER Department:

Completion of 35 hours of University course work.
• Completion of HPER 1500, 1520, 1530, 1550 or 1700 with a
grade of "C" or better.
• Satisfactory completion of BIOS 1120, if required in
your program.
• Completion of an application for admission to the Department
at the HPER office on the fourth floor of the Student Recreation
Center.

Teacher Certification programs
The Department
of Health, Physical Education and Recreation offers two majors
and three minors for those students pursuing degrees leading
to teacher certification or endorsements in the State of Michigan.
The majors offered are Health Education and Physical Education.
Successful completion of these programs leads to K-12 certification
in the State of Michigan. The three minor areas of study are:
Health Education (6-12), Secondary Physical Education (6-12)
and Special Physical Education. Extensive field practica are
incorporated in several courses within the curricula. Those
students interested in either the Health Education or Physical
Education curriculum options should enroll in either HPER 1550:
Foundations of Health Education or HPER 1500: Foundations of
Physical Education during their first or second semester at
Western Michigan University. For more information about the
