What our College of Education and Human Development should be about fits well with our University's increasing reputation as a student-centered research university. The sometimes-polarized goals of research productivity and student-centeredness merge especially well in this College as our teaching, research and service combine to improve the human condition. Contemporary, knowledge-based and competent teaching must remain a priority across our programs, even as our research informs and our service improves practice in educational and other organizations. By these means, we focus our efforts on increasing prospects for all who will inherit the future.
The environment we create for doing this great work will in large part determine our success. I am quite convinced that we can best fulfill our mission by practicing true collegiality and meaningful collaboration on a daily basis. Accordingly, I believe that unfailingly respectful civility and exemplary academic citizenship should be the hallmarks of our every effort. By practicing the highest standards of professional, ethical and humane behavior in our day-to-day interactions with each other and with those we serve, we model appropriate behavior for all who will become tomorrow's role models.
To promote scholarly activity and research that informs and supports instruction and fieldwork; to provide the necessary resources; and to facilitate a supportive environment wherein students become effective learners, educators, practitioners, scholars, researchers and related specialists. Our graduates are professionals who are sensitive to and are experienced in working with people of all ages and with diverse backgrounds in schools, organizations, communities and families. Crucial to our mission is the conducting of research and evaluation, which guides the development of effective instruction, provides service to communities and explores issues meaningful to the teaching and learning process.
The College of Education and Human Development is committed to engaging in outreach programs, field experiences and activities that foster professional partnerships to provide services that challenge and enrich the lives of individuals of all ages in a changing, diverse and complex global society. *Adopted Aug. 27, 1998
