Our Environmental Focus

Environmental Chemistry is a focus of graduate education in the Chemistry Department at Western Michigan University.
Environmental Chemistry and related environmental research based on the integration of: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry with that of collaborators in a wide range of fields is a major form of Departmental Research. The mechanisms of action and systems through which chemical substances cycle in the environment have been the subject of research at WMU for nearly twenty years. This legacy provided a basis from which strategic national and international collaborations have been built to encourage the development of research networks at more than fifty institutions world- wide. Students at all levels have benefited from these extended research relationships- building careers in atmospheric, biospheric, and hydrogeologic sciences as well as emerging areas of nanotechnology and chemical biology.

Faculty home pages and links to those of collaborators provide a current view of recent research efforts which also enrich the curriculum through existing courses and independent study opportunities.
