Early English Manuscripts in Facsimile Series

Early English Manuscripts in Facsimile Series

In 1952 the Copenhagen publishers of Rosenkilde and Bagger began their career as the publishers of Old English manuscripts in facsimile. The first of the series was the facsimile publication of Bede's Ecclesiastical History , also known as the "Leningrad Bede."

The series of manuscripts containing Old English and Latin is 29 volumes and counting. Special Collections at Western Michigan University has a complete set of this significant series.

The manuscripts are generally reproduced in black and white with some additional color plates added in. One of the facsimiles contains the oldest manuscript of the Rule of St. Benedict , which relates well to the Institute of Cistercian Studies Collection.

A great variety of literature and styles are represented in this series such as The Old English Illustrated Pharmacopoeia, Bald's Leechbook, The Pastoral Care of Pope Gregory I, and Aelfric's First Series of Catholic Homilies .
