Growing Local roots
Eighteen undergraduate student journalists from the Environmental Reporting class at Western Michigan University completed a multimedia news project entitled '"Growing Local Roots" during the Fall 2011 semester. This in-depth project focuses on local food connections in Southwest Michigan communities, and explores issues related to environmental sustainability, food access, food security, local food sources, economic development, food quality, and personal health.

Eclipse Event
The first annual Eclipse Awards is accepting entries designed to recognize excellence in media arts, and to honor the best regional works in film, video, sound, and television production. Deadline for entries is March 2nd. A gala reception for award recipients to be held at The Gram on April 13th, 2012.

Bob Hercules
School of Communication alumnus, Bob Hercules will premiere his new film,  "A Good Man" , in Chicago on  Friday, Sept. 23 at the Gene Siskel Film Center .  The 8:15 show will feature a post screening discussion with co-director Gordon Quinn, Bob, D.P. Keith Walker, and editor David Simpson.  The film will then run all week at the Siskel. A Good Man chronicles acclaimed choreographer Bill T. Jones and his company for two years as they create a new dance/theater work about the legacy of Abraham Lincoln.  Co-Produced by Kartemquin Films, Media Process Group and  American Masters , the film is a fascinating look at the creative process of one of America's great artists.  Slant Magazine said of the film, " A remarkable testament to the creative process. . . a film about artistic vision and how it's communicated ."

Serbinski
Michele Serbenski who received her MA in organizational communication from the School of Communication, has been named director of planning and performance excellence with the Western Michigan University School of Medicine, and will serve as a member of the senior leadership team for the medical school.

Two School of Communication graduate students have won the university’s highest awards for teaching and research. Krystal Bresnahan received a 2009-2010 All-University award for Graduate Research and Creative Activities and Stephanie Ruhl received a 2009-2010 All-University Graduate Teaching Effectiveness award.

The School of Communication announces the recipients of its 2009-2010 scholarships and academic awards. On April 16 these recipients were honored at a ceremony held in the Bernhard Center.

On April 16 the School of Communication held its annual honors ceremony and induction into the Eta Rho chapter of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communication honor society for undergraduate students. Fifty-three Western Michigan University students were inducted during a mid-day ceremony at the Bernhard Center on WMU’s main Kalamazoo campus.

Professor Sue Ellen Christian received a College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Achievement in Teaching award for 2010. An Associate professor of Journalism, Professor Christian joined the faculty in the School of Communication in 2001.

Savage
Maureen Savage, current MA student and former undergraduate (April, ‘09) in the School of Communication, has won a Region 4 Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists for the feature piece on home canning that she produced for WUOM Michigan Radio this past summer. Maureen will receive her award at a luncheon on April 10 in Cleveland. This award competition is open annually to all student journalists in the region. Her radio segment will now be entered into the national competition.

Krystal
On April 9, Krystal Bresnahan, a December 2009 graduate of the MA program in Communication, was recognized for her poster presentation at the 4th Annual WMU Research and Creative Activities Poster Presentation Competition. Krystal received one of fifteen awards for her poster presentation about The Grand Tour of Europe Experience, a documentary exploring the everyday lives of eleven WMU students while they studied in Western Europe. This documentary is currently used as a recruitment tool for the Haenicke Institute for Global Education, Witte Travel Company, and also displayed at the annual Study & Intern Abroad Fair.

Our School of Communication visiting scholar, Sally Helgesen, will give a public presentation entitled "Leading in 24/7: Five Key Trends Transforming Organizations" on Wednesday, March 25, from noon to 1:00 pm in Brown 2028

WMU's Ethics Bowl team competed in the national championship in Cincinnati over spring break, making it all the way to the quarterfinals with a perfect record in preliminary competition.
