Dr. John A. Tedeschi Collection

Dr. John A. Tedeschi was both a professor of Renaissance literature and a rare books librarian at the Newberry Library and at the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he became a Distinguished Professor in 1998.

Professor Tedeschi collected nearly 50 humanistic works of the Italian Renaissance printed between 1542-1838. The collection focuses on grammar, history, and poetry of the Italian Renaissance. Some of the titles in the collection include: Historia Naturale by Pliny the Elder (1543), Gerusalemme Liberata (1735), Strategematum Satanae (1652), and Florentini Princeps by Niccolo Machiavelli printed in 1643, about 100 years after Machiavelli's death.

The collection was purchased from Dr. Tedeschi by the Medieval Institute and then given to Special Collections at Western Michigan University.
