Mary Sarton
The May Sarton collection contains a number valuable research tools. As a part of the Carol Ann Haenicke American Women's Poetry Collection we have acquired much of her poetry and novels. In addition to this are nine books/proofs from May Sarton's private library with inscriptions from the authors, personal correspondence, manuscripts, and galley proofs.
May Sarton (1912-1994) was an influential novelist and poet, born in Wendelgem, Belgium, but immigrated to Cambridge, MA. in 1916 with her parents at the age of four. She had her first publication when she was seventeen in a poetry magazine, but did not catch the attention of the feminist world until the mid 60's. It was not until 1993 that May Sarton received the Levinson Prize for Poetry.
Special Collections holds numerous editions of her poetry and novels, as well as two manuscripts: Collected Poems, 1930-1973 by May Sarton, a corrected typescript, and A World of Light Publishing Archive 1975-1976 . Also included in this collection is a series of personal letters and documents related to the publishing and performance rights of her material dating from February 18, 1947 to July 2, 1966.
